Bookmakers William Hill has been fined £6.2 million on Tuesday, after it was found that the group had failed to prevent money from criminal activities being deposited.

Ten customers deposited money linked to criminal offences, from which William Hill gained profits of around £1.2 million. The Gambling Commission said William Hill did not ‘adequately seek information about the source of their funds or establish whether they were problem gamblers’, when they accepted the deposits between November 2014 and August 2016.

The bookmakers have been fined more than £5 million, as well as being told divest themselves of the £1.2 million profits.

Neil McArthur, the Commission’s executive director said: “Gambling businesses have a responsibility to ensure that they keep crime out of gambling and tackle problem gambling – and as part of that they must be constantly curious about where the money they are taking is coming from.”
