Emma Watson’s new Instagram teaches a lesson in sustainable fashion

The Beauty and the Beast actress is using her new Instagram account to raise awareness for sustainable fashion.

Whilst on the promotional tour for her new film, Beauty and the Beast, Emma Watson has found the time to promote and raise awareness for the importance of sustainable and ethical fashion using her new Instagram account – @the_press_tour.

In the first post, Emma Watson modelled a coat from fashion house Stella McCartney, where her caption highlighted the brand’s dedication to ethical fashion.

“Coat is from @stellamccartney, the world’s first luxury brand that is committed to producing products that do not use leather, skins, feathers or fur,” she captioned. “Instead, Stella has spent years developing ways of using materials such as regenerated cashmere, recycled fabrics, organic cotton and forest-friendly fabrics.”

This is not the first time Emma Watson has used her platform to encourage followers to pursue a more sustainable lifestyle. She famously wore a dress made of 100 recycled water bottles to the Met Gala.

The dress, designed by Calvin Klein and Eco Age, was made entirely from plastic bottles.

“With the help of Eco Age this five piece look is created from three fabrics woven from yarns all made from recycled plastic bottles” Watson’s stylist Sarah Slutsky wrote on Instagram, explaining the Met Gala outfit.

The feminist campaigner has long been an activist for sustainable fashion. When promoting Regression, Watson wore dresses by different fashion designers who use ethical and eco-friendly methods of production at each different event.

“What is important to Emma obviously is women’s issues and the apparel industry is the largest employer of women globally, but 98% of those women aren’t receiving a living wage. So it’s really important to make sure they are being treated fairly for the beautiful work they are doing.” said ZADY founder, Maxine Bedat.

It’s not just ethical fashion that the actress hopes to raise awareness about through social media, as part of her work as a UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, the actress also launched the virtual feminist book club Our Shared Shelf where the current book choice is Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues.
