Your alternative weekend guide to Amsterdam

Amsterdam canal Singel with typical dutch houses and houseboats during morning blue hour, Holland, Netherlands.

Well known for canals and the infamous Red Light District, Amsterdam is a popular weekend break with tourists often finding themselves at the same popular sites.

Want to explore some of the less well-known areas on your city break? Add some of the following activities onto your excursion…

    Breakfast at Staring at Jacob

Staring at Jacob – a brunch not to be missed.

Located in West Amsterdam, Staring at Jacob is a perfect way to start a day of wandering the endless cobbled streets of this beautiful city. With an impressive selection of brunch and cocktails (Bloody Mary with gherkin and bacon, anyone?), the friendly staff and cool atmosphere will leave you full and satisfied.

    Afternoon in Westerpark

Wander down to Westerpark, the large park in western Amsterdam that often hosts many exciting cultural events. Explore the surrounding neighbourhoods, full of lively markets, independent shops and cafes.

    Drinks at Brouwerij ‘t IJ

Brouwerij ‘t IJ, located in Amsterdam Oost.

When in The Netherlands, the only appropriate place to go drinking has to be in Brouwerij ‘t IJ – a brewery located in an old windmill. Try a selection of beers brewed on site at very reasonable prices, surrounded by locals and tourists alike.

    Hortus Botanicus

Hortus Botanicus – botanical gardens in the East.

As one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world, Hortus Botanicus is one of Amsterdam’s hidden gems. For only €5, spend a couple of hours getting lost in the greenhouse and gardens of the botanical gardens located in Artis.

    Noord

Often described as Amsterdam’s ‘up and coming’ neighbourhood, take the free ferry from Amsterdam central station to the north of the river. A completely different vibe from the rest of the city, Noord boasts a cool and industrial side to the city – and an escape from the crowds. When here, check out the various bars and flea markets. Also in the north, A’DAM Lookout – Europe’s highest swing, which provides a slightly pricey but unforgettable experience.
