Jill Stein raises $4.5m for election recount

As the court halts the Michigan recount, Stein pledges her efforts are not over.

Green Party presidential candidate has launched an online fundraising page, seeking donations to request recounts of the election result in three key states.

Stein isn’t requesting the recount for the Green Party’s sake, but to ensure the election results are authentic in the states Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

In these battleground states, Trump won the votes by around one percent despite Clinton leading in the opinion polls.

The fundraising page says it will need around $6m-7m to challenge the results in all three of the states.

Stein said she is acting due to “compelling evidence of voting anomalies” and that data analysis have indicated “significant discrepancies in vote totals” that were released by the state authorities.

“These concerns need to be investigated before the 2016 presidential election is certified. We deserve elections we can trust.” she said in a statement.

The focus on Wisconsin is due to Trump’s disproportionate win via electronic voting compared to those using paper ballots. The use of electronic voting is banned in many states after security analysts have repeatedly shown how easily they can be hacked.

“We’re not doing this because we expect the results to be overturned or because there’s a smoking gun,” said Dr Stein, a security analyst. “We are doing it because the American people deserve to have confidence in the voting system.”

Computer experts have calculated that if electronic votes were changed to match the paper votes in the rest of the Wisconsin, Clinton would have received an extra 30,000 votes. The Democratic candidate lost Wisconsin by 27,000.

The deadlines for a recount are Friday for Wisconsin, Monday for Pennsylvania and 30th November for Michigan, where Trump has a 0.3% lead.

While Trump won 306 electoral college votes, compared to 232 for Clinton, the Democrat now has almost two million more votes than him and pressure is mounting among liberals for an investigation.
