28 Palestinians shot dead ahead of US embassy opening

Almost 1,000 Palestinians have been injured at the border protests.

At least 28 Palestinians have been shot and killed by Israeli troops in Gaza, according to Palestinian officials.

The health officials have said that 900 Palestinians have been wounded, 450 of them by live bullets before the opening of the US embassy in Jerusalem.

Weekly protests have taken place at the frontier, where over 60 Palestinians have died with thousands injured. No Israeli casualties have been reported.

The opening of the US embassy will take place later on Monday and will be attended by top US officials included Donald and Ivanka Trump.

“We look forward to celebrating Israel’s 70th anniversary and the bright future ahead,” Ivanka Trump wrote on her Instagram account ahead of the opening. “We will pray for the boundless potential of the future of the US-Israel alliance, and we will pray for peace.”

The move of the embassy has led to widespread criticism and outrage. The Arab League said it was “unjust decision” and the ongoing “Israeli occupation” of the city.

Trump’s decision to move the embassy was met by six weeks of protests.

“I have determined that it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel,” Trump said in December. “While previous presidents have made this a major campaign promise, they failed to deliver. Today, I am delivering.”

The Israeli military shared leaflets on Monday, reading:

“To the rioters, you are taking part in violent riots that jeopardise your lives. Hamas is taking advantage of you in order to hide its failures and is threatening you and your family members’ well-being. The IDF is prepared to face all scenarios and will act against every attempt to damage the security fence or harm IDF soldiers or Israeli civilians.”

“Do not let Hamas cynically use you as its puppet. Stay away from the security fence, from terror instigators and the violent rioters! Save yourselves and prioritize building your future! IDF Command”
