Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) has announced plans to launch Amazon Key – a new service that will let couriers leave packages inside customers’ homes.

Couriers will use a smart lock and be filmed using a webcam once inside. Customers will then have the option of watching the delivery live, or shortly after.

The smart lock and key systems are being made by Yale and Kwikset. They are also designed to be used by cleaners, guests and dog walkers.

CCS Insight analyst Ben Wood said: “Amazon seems to be on an unstoppable mission to own every aspect of the home,”

“My understanding is there’s an awful lot of work being done to make connected locks secure,”

“But it would only take a few incidents to stop this dead in the water – people wouldn’t want to have something on their front door if they felt it wasn’t secure.”

The trial of the new delivery system will take place in 37 locations in US cities.

For those who are not convinced by the system, the group is doing its best to ensure safety.

“These individuals are thoroughly vetted, with comprehensive background checks and motor vehicle records reviews,”, the retail giant said.

“The driver will knock first and then request to unlock your door with their Amazon handheld scanner. Amazon verifies that the package belongs to the address and the driver is near the door, turns on Amazon Cloud Cam and unlocks your door.

“No special codes or keys are given to the driver. The driver will then place the package just inside your door and request to relock the door. Once the delivery is complete and your door is relocked, you’ll get a final notification and can watch a video clip of the delivery,” Amazon explains.

The camera required for the Key system costs $120 (£90). With the smart lock, will cost users a total of $249.99.
