US non-farm payroll figures underwhelming in August

Key US employment figures came in below expectations on Friday, with just 151,000 jobs being created in August.

The non-farm payroll figures suggest US employment is starting to slow, with many analysts’ expecting the figure to be around 190,000. It falls well below the average monthly rise of 204,000 this year.

US unemployment remained at 4.9 percent.

The figure is likely to have an effect on the Federal Reserve’s decision whether to raise interest rates in September, as it has been hinted by several Fed members. The lower than expected number suggests an unexpected slowdown in US employment and may negate a September rate rise.
