#iPhoneAt10: Celebrating 10 years of the world’s most famous smartphone

Thursday marked a historic day for the tech industry: on this day exactly ten years ago, the world’s most famous smartphone was went on sale for the very first time.

Steve Jobs announced the device at the Macworld Expo 2007 in San Francisco, saying that it would ‘revolutionise’ the phone industry in the same way it had already done with the Macintosh in 1984 and the iPod in 2001. Ten years on, it is fair to say that this statement was correct; more than 700 million people now use an iPhone, making it one of the most successful devices created in the last decade.

The original iPhone turned heads when it was launched, with a 3.5-inch display and no physical keyboard. At its launch, Jobs explained it as: “An iPod, a phone, and an internet communicator. Are you getting it? These are not three separate devices. This is one device.”

Fans took to Twitter to celebrate the iPhone’s birthday, with the #iPhoneAt10 hashtag trending on the social media site.

Over the last ten years the iPhone has become a necessity for many users. As Apple’s CEO Tim Cook said last year when the company announced that it had hit over 1 billion sales of the device; the iPhone is “more than a constant companion,” it’s “an essential part of our daily life.”
