Team GB athlete robbed at gunpoint in Rio

Reports suggest that a Team GB athlete has been robbed in the Brazilian capital Rio de Janeiro on his way back to the Olympic Village.

According to the Guardian, the incident happened in the early hours of Tuesday morning where the athlete was held an gunpoint and robbed. He is unharmed, but shaken by the ordeal.

This is the latest in a series of attacks on Olympic athletes since the games begun, after British Olympian Greg Rutherford had his mobile phone stolen over the weekend. The US men’s swimming team have also reportedly been the victims of a gunpoint robbery.

As reported in the Guardian, Team GB athletes have been warned not to wear their kit outside the Olympic village and not to carry valuables. An email read:

“Avoid leaving the village after dark in anything other than British Olympic Association/Local Organising Committee/UK Athletics transport – taxis cannot be considered safe late at night.”
