New ‘Millennial Railcard’ set to launch next year

Commuters are set for further dismay with train prices to rise in January 2017.

As part of a new government initiative to offer more deals to today’s Millenials, a new railcard will be launched early next year for those aged between 26-30.

According to the leaked documents, the railcard will be rolled out nationally from early next year and will give users up to a third off travel.

As well as the new railcard, it is understood that Phillip Hammond will unveil several giveaways in his November budget to gain increased support from younger voters.

The leaked document states that the railcard will be offered to 10,000 users of the Greater Anglia network in December to trial the new card. The current young person railcard saves users an average of £190 every year. Savings on the millennial card are expected to be greater due to daily commuting.

The news is expected to be celebrated among the generation who are the first to be poorer than their parents.

“Millennials born in the late 1980s were earning no more in their late 20s than those born in the early 1970s did at their age,” said a report by The Resolution Foundation thinktank who say that young people are being hit hardest by the recent pay squeeze.

The card is expected to be digital only and users will have to download the Railcard app, which is being rolled out among holders of the 16-25 card.

“It’s a great idea. One of the problems with the current fare structure is that it does not give enough discounts for younger people around this age. But fare reform needs to go a lot further, especially for people in part-time work,” said chief executive of the group Campaign For Better Transport.

“If the government really wanted to help young adults with transport, it would offer them a half-fare option on the buses.”
